Engineering drawings

A drawing should tell the next person how to make, inspect, or assemble the approved design without forcing them to guess what the 3D model meant. The model supplies geometry; the drawing supplies controlled communication.

Start from the right model state

Create the drawing from the Part or Assembly that represents the current reviewed design. Before placing views, confirm the model orientation, configuration or product state, and revision context. A clean sheet based on the wrong model is still the wrong drawing.

Choose a main view that makes the component recognizable and exposes its functional geometry. Add projected, section, detail, or other necessary views only when they remove ambiguity. More views do not automatically make a drawing clearer.

Dimension for the work that follows

Add the dimensions that control manufacture and inspection, using stable datums and a consistent scheme. Avoid dimensioning the same requirement in several places. Repeated dimensions create a disagreement the moment one value changes and the others do not.

The published drawing capability includes dimensions, tolerance annotations, geometric tolerances, and notes. Use each only when the requirement has been established by the engineering owner. Do not infer a tolerance from the screen or add a generic note to make the sheet appear complete.

• Make critical interfaces and datum relationships easy to find.

• Separate manufacturing requirements from reference information.

• Leave enough space for dimensions and notes to be read at the intended sheet size.

Associative does not mean approved

Model-linked views can update when the 3D source changes, but the software cannot decide whether the revised drawing still communicates the design correctly. A changed feature can remove an edge, alter a section, move a dimension, or make an existing note inaccurate.

After every meaningful model change, review each affected view, dimension, tolerance, note, and table. Resolve dangling or crowded annotations and confirm that the source model state is still the one intended for delivery.

Release check

Before exporting or sharing the drawing, check the title and identity, units, scale, model state, drawing views, revision context, and required approvals. Open the delivered file once outside the editing flow. This catches missing views, font or line problems, and accidental use of an earlier output.
