CAD import and export

Import and export are handoffs between engineering systems. A successful transfer is not simply a file that opens: the scale, orientation, assembly structure, geometry, and intended revision must still be trustworthy for the next task.

Decide what the imported data is for

Ask whether the data will be used as visual context, a reference for new design, geometry to modify, or the current product definition. The answer changes how carefully you need to preserve assembly structure and how much remodeling may be justified.

Confirm the source system, supported exchange format, unit system, file revision, and whether an assembly depends on companion files. Exact format and version coverage can change, so use the formats shown in the current product workflow rather than assuming that a familiar extension is supported.

Inspect before you build on it

Open the imported data by itself first. Check overall size, orientation, origin, component count, names, and whether expected bodies arrived as solids or surfaces. Look for missing parts, empty components, gaps, duplicate bodies, inverted faces, or geometry placed far from the main model.

Imported geometry may preserve the final shape without the source application's editable feature history, constraints, mates, or drawing intelligence. Do not describe a neutral exchange file as fully parametric unless you have verified the model structure. If future changes matter, decide whether to edit the received geometry, reference it, or rebuild the design intent in native features.

• Measure one known dimension to catch a unit mismatch early.

• Compare the assembly tree and visible result with the sender's source view.

• Keep the original received file unchanged until the imported result is accepted.

Prepare the outgoing handoff

Choose a supported format for the receiving system and the work it must perform. A file intended for viewing, manufacturing geometry, drawing delivery, or continued CAD editing may require a different output. Ask the recipient what they can read instead of sending several unexplained formats.

Confirm units, coordinate orientation, included and hidden components, suppressed content, drawing sheets, and the exact model state being delivered. Remove unrelated construction or confidential project content only when doing so does not damage the required geometry or context.

Verify the file you actually sent

Reopen the exported file in an appropriate viewer or receiving workflow and repeat a short geometry check. Record the source project, source revision, export date, chosen format, and any known loss of editability. That note is often more useful to the recipient than the filename alone.
